Gonzalez settled his family near the abandoned Fort Myers, where he began the area's first trading post. He traded tobacco, beads, and gunpowder, and sold otter, bobcat, and gator hide to the neighboring Seminole. A small community began to form around the trading post. During the Second Seminole War, between 1835 and 1842, the U.S. Army operated Fort Dulaney at Punta Rassa, at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River. When a hurricane destroyed Fort Dulaney in October 1841, army operations were moved up the Caloosahatchee River to a site named Fort Harvie.

Over the next decade, the population of the community doubled as its shrimping industry grew. Fort Myers Beach was incorporated in 1995, but settlers first established the community in 1862. The first residents made a living by fishing and growing crops to sell on the mainland in Estero.
The arrival of the railroad, however, also led to greater segregation in Fort Myers. These more middle-class black citizens, as well as the new African-American laborers, were increasingly pressured to move to the segregated area that would become known as Safety Hill. This area of town, as can be seen by contemporary photographs, had a lower quality of houses and street surfaces.

As time went on the Arcade Theatre was converted from a vaudeville house into a movie house. A wall was constructed to divide the stage creating two screening rooms. Fast forward to today and what was once known as the Arcade Theatre is now the Florida Repertory Theatre which is a performing arts hall.
