The Ford House was built in 1887 as part of a large tract of simple middle-class homes in downtown Los Angeles built by the Beaudry Brothers. The home is particularly interesting because of its inhabitant – John J. Ford, a well-known wood carver. Ford's works include carvings for the California State Capitol, the Iolani Palace in Hawaii, and Leland Stanford's private railroad car. Because of his occupation, the exterior and interior carvings were all done by hand in ornate, one-of-a-kind patterns. The museum focuses on interpreting the years 1850 to 1950, a century of unprecedented growth in Los Angeles. Volunteer interpreters give thorough tours that incorporate the history, architecture, and culture of the region.

I go to Bergie's more than any other place on this list, and it's not just because I love locally roasted coffee. When the weather is cooler, I can spend hours sitting on the quaint garden patio overlooking the small cottage that doubles as a coffee shop. The building was home to the homesteading Clare family until the 1960s and now hosts a small cafe run by the Bergesons. The Salt Box was one of the last homes on Bunker Hill, and one of the first moved to the Heritage Square Museum grounds. It has a place of remembrance as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church was built in 1897, located at 732 North Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena.

At the time of the final move, Pasadena Heritage argued that the Longfellow house should remain in the city of its origin. But the horse was already out of the octagon; Longfellow’s house should never have been moved in the first place from the original location on San Pasqual. Fowler followed his own advice and built his family’s 70-foot-high, 100-foot-wide, three-story mega-octagon, visible for miles. Though he published his ideas in books with detailed diagrams, Fowler was only moderately successful in solving America’s housing needs.

The church was designated as Historic-Cultural Monument no. 89 in 1971.[6] In 2008, the church was operated as the "Iglesia Adventista Central," as shown in the adjacent picture. An interesting profile and several photographs of the church can be found on the Big Orange Landmarks web site. This is a must, there is always a line so be patient it's worth the wait.

Another standout is the 1876 William Hayes Perry residence (also known as Mount Pleasant House), considered by many to be the first proper "mansion" built in Los Angeles. Perry was a self-made lumberman and a great friend of William Mulholland. He hired Kysor and Matthews, the revered architects of Pico House, to build the two-story Greek Revival Italianate at 1315 Mount Pleasant, in the then-fashionable suburb of Boyle Heights.

Given its location, it is not surprising that, over the years, security has been an issue at the museum. Caretakers have lived in upstairs rooms of Hale House, and in the 1980s two rescued guard dogs were fired from their jobs after they were discovered playing with a group of teenagers who had broken into the museum's grounds. Heritage Square Museum is a living history and open-air architecture museum located beside the Arroyo Seco Parkway in the Montecito Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, in the southern Arroyo Seco area. The living history museum shows the story of development in Southern California through historical architectural examples. That flood came from the new house up the hill, at 864 Stradella Road, on the market for $49.9 million, which has become infamous in the neighborhood as a water waster because of another leak into the street. Over the next few years, more and more historic buildings were threatened with demolition.

Even when they succeeded in designating structures as monuments, this only meant that a no-funds "hold" was placed on them for one year, nothing more than a stay of execution. So the Museum painstakingly raised money for each individual relocation and renovation needed to save these structures. Most of these buildings had exteriors layered with stucco and interiors virtually obliterated by years of hard use. There are now eight historic structures at the Museum, in various stages of continuous repair. Built between 1876 and 1899, these disparate buildings are a fascinating look into an infantile Los Angeles without an architectural identity. Along the Arroyo Seco Parkway from downtown Los Angeles to Pasadena is a collection of 19th century buildings saved from L.A.’s busy wrecking ball.

Central to his success even then was his ability to woo foreign financiers — French and German backers, and in particular the SAAR Foundation, a group of Saudi investors. It is in Bel Air, though, that an army of resistance has risen, a coalition of influential neighbors with their own considerable resources. Call it the haves vs. the have-even-mores, or perhaps the old (for Los Angeles) money vs. the new. One of the Strada Vecchia neighbors, Nancy Walton Laurie, a Walmart heir, accused Mr. Hadid of encroaching on her land and harming her eucalyptus tree, damage she says will cost her $75,000. This year, articles in The Times pierced the secrecy of shell companies owning units in one archetypal condominium complex in Manhattan — the Time Warner Center. Among the owners were a growing proportion of wealthy foreigners, including a number of government officials and people close to them.

It allows visitors to see the different architectural styles that were prominent during the era we often simply blanket as "Victorian." From the start, the Heritage Square Museum seemed to be facing an uphill battle in its quest to recreate the past. In March 1969, Donegan's Castle and the Salt Box, the last remaining houses on the once magnificent Bunker Hill, were moved to the museum.

The large corner tower has a loft room accessible only from the home's exterior. On Christmas Day in 2022, Gilbert police received a call about a car that crashed into a home near Recker and Warner roads. When officers arrived, they found the windshield of the car was riddled with bullet holes. Authorities say Kinney was in the driver’s seat, seriously injured from two bullet wounds. In October of that same year they were set on fire by vandals and destroyed. Heritage Square Museum was established in 1969 by the Cultural Heritage Board. The board itself was a response to the rapid destruction of Los Angeles's historic landmarks and neighborhoods; the five-member panel was given the authority to designate Historic-Cultural Monuments in the city of Los Angeles. Surprisingly, given LA's dismal preservation track record, it was one of the first of its kind in the country, predating New York's Landmarks Preservation Law by three years. At its first meeting, the board designated five Historic-Cultural Monuments, all threatened with demolition. These included the "Salt Box," a famous mansion atop the once grand neighborhood of Bunker Hill.
